Childrens Age Groups

We organize the age groups for our tennis lessons according the the LTA guidelines. The reason for the groups is to generally allow the child to maximize their learning by being in groups of children around their age group. Size of the tennis court also varies throughout the different groups, gradually increasing in size as the children progress towards Yellow Ball. This makes it much more managable and enjoyable for them as they learn the game, the ball bounce is also different, bouncing lower than the standard adult tennis ball "Yellow Ball". Occasionally children will be put into a group which is outside of the age range for the group if they might be more suited to the ability of the group they've been put in.

Here's a brief breakdown of the different age groups and their corresponding ball colour.

Tots Tennis - Foam Ball - Age 3 - 4

Lightweight foam balls are used for ages 3-4, moving slower through the air and are also lighter, making it easier for young children to play.

Red Ball - Age 5 - 8

The next stage up from Foam Ball, Red Balls move & bounce 75% slower than adult "Yellow Ball", making it a perfect way for ages 5 - 8  to learn the game in a small size court.

Orange Ball - Age 9 - 10

The next stage up from Red Ball, Orange Balls move & bounce 50% slower than adult "Yellow Ball", making it a perfect way for ages 9 - 10 to learn the game and start playing in a slightly larger court than Red Ball.

Green Ball - Age 11 - 13

The next stage up from Orange Ball, Green Balls move & bounce 25% slower than adult "Yellow Ball", and the court size is the full tennis court. Giving 11 - 12 year olds a great introduction to learn the game on the full court with slightly slower moving/bouncing tennis balls.

Yellow Ball - Age 13 - 15

The next stage up from Green Ball, Yellow Ball is a full adult ball played on the full tennis court. Beginners of this age group may be introduced with Green Ball for a while before heading up to Yellow Ball, however if a child has progressed through the groups they will be ready for this stage.
